W.R. (Rusty) Hick

In appreciation...A message to staff on my departure.

Dear KPR staff:

We should all be very, very proud of the work we do for public education.    KPR is extremely well regarded around our province, and in turn, our province is recognized around the world as being among the best education systems anywhere.  We’ve made this happen together, through hard work, commitment, and caring for what’s best for our students.  Thank you for the part you play in that.

I’m writing this note to let you know that I’m leaving KPR but I’m not leaving public education.  I’ve been honoured to be appointed the next executive director of the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association, where I will continue to advocate for our excellent public education system.

Change for me is exciting and positive and this one is even more positive,  knowing that I will be leaving KPR in a very, very good position.

Most importantly, I want to thank the people that I have worked alongside for the past 18 years, including almost eight as your Director of Education.  We’ve learned and grown and had fun together while making fantastic things happen for kids.

With tremendous gratitude and respect,

Rusty Hick, Director of Education and Secretary of the Board, is the Chief Executive Officer and is responsible to the Board for the achievement of the Board's strategic plan and the overall operations of the system.  This includes educational, cultural, strategic, organizational, fiscal, human resources and communications leadership.  The Director of Education is supported by a team of eight supervisory officers, or superintendents.  Superintendents report to the Director.

The Director of Education champions the implementation of the Board's strategic plan: Living, Learning and Leading in a Changing World.

As well, the Director is responsible for:

  • the Corporate Affairs Department
  • the KPR/OPC Leadership Team
  • governance support to the Board, Chairperson and Vice-chairperson, and the review of Board policies
  • partnership development initiatives (all departments will continue to develop partnerships related to their responsibilities)
  • school councils in collaboration with the Chairperson of the Board and Corporate Affairs Department
  • Student Leadership
  • the Chairpersons' Committee
  • the Parent Involvement Committee
